Jobs in Indian Railways/Aug.,2013

Well dear friends. Do you that which is one of the most searched job in government Sector. ? Yes indeed that is the, Indian Railways. Indian Railway is the one of the biggest network in Indian society and in Government sector as well. Thousands of trains running every day on tracks and millions of passengers are using its services day & night.

Railways were  introduced in India in the year 1853 and by the year 1947 , the year India got Independence there were around forty two railway systems. By the year 1951 whole Indian Railways systems was centralized making it the largest network in the world which includes the short distance and long distance rail systems spreading all over the country covering a route of approx. 63000 Kilometers  running a total of 14400+ trains daily which includes the passenger trains. And that makes its importance and that makes its demand in jobs sector as well. To run this biggest show in whole of the Asia Government Needs the huge manpower and this is one of the reason which compels  the Indian Railways to issue notifications regularly for search of the suitable staff in various categories.

In Indian Railways, employees are working in various categories .There are around 700 categories of staff divided into four Groups viz. Group A, B, C & D assigned according to working responsibilities. The manpower is mainly distributed in Open line & Construction Wings having, Engineering, Signal & Telecommunication, Electrical, Administration, Accounts and Stores departments. Open line in addition has staff working in the Transportation, Mechanical, Commercial, Medical and Security departments.

More than  1.4 million employees are working in  Indian Railways. The jobs in Railway is very challenging one. If you want to join this family you must know that  Railway employee salary is at par with other central government employees . Each year the employees of Railways get bonus for 60 days, 75 days For the first 5 years of service of a Railway employee he is given one set of pass for staff and family to and fro to travel any destination in India. This pass is for one single to and fro journey.  An average Railway employee works in some of the worst working conditions. Day & night, scorching sun or pouring rain he is forced to work. Work for some of the categories like gangmen, technician are extremely arduous in nature. Most employees work 48 hours or more. Some are even forced to work even 72 hours sometimes.

Though Railway is one of the place where highly skilled workers are required. However fear not. The responsibilities for capacity building in the workers is the job of the Railway itself. Following seven Centralized Training Institutes (CTI) cater to  the training needs of railway Staff;

1.Railway Staff College, Vadodara.
2.Indian Railways Institute of Civil Engineering, Pune.
3. Indian Railways Institute of Signal Engineering and  Telecommunications, Secunderabad.
4.Indian Railways Institute of Mechanical & Electrical  Engineering, Jamalpur.
5.Indian Railways Institute of Electrical Engineering, Nasik.
6. Indian Railways Institute of Transport Management,  Lucknow.
7. Jagjivan Ram Railway Protection Force Academy, Lucknow

The Centralized Training Institutes apart from probationary  training, cater to various specialized training needs of officers.  Railway Staff College provides inputs in General Management,  Strategic Management and function-related areas for serving  railway officers.

Other offices as well conduct specialized technical training  courses in respective functional areas. Training programmes on  Information Technology are also being conducted   to provide solutions for information management and decision  support requirements. Need based special courses conducted for trainees from abroad and  non-railway organizations in India as well.

The training emphasizes on professional approach to  learn with a purpose. Besides in-house faculty, faculties  with diverse experience in business, industry and government are  used to meet the changing needs arising out of technological  development and socio-economic transformation regularly.

Training requirements of non-gazetted staff are taken care of  by over 300 training centers . Training has been  made mandatory at different stages for staff belonging to the safety  and technical categories. Certain categories of staff overdue for 84 refresher training are taken off from sensitive duty, till completion
of the training.
